HATAY SILK WEAVE
Hatay Silk Weave is woven in Hatay province Samandağ district and Hatay province Defne district Harbiye Quarter. Silk weaving has been known and woven since Byzantine within the region. In Ibn Battuta's travel book, it was mentioned that a fabric called "Debiliye" was woven in the Bugras region near Hatay. In the 1895 Aleppo Provincial Yearbook, mulberry groves farmed for silkworm in Antakya, weaving in Hacıköy and Yoğunoluk villages, and the silk factory in the region were mentioned. Today, Hatay Silk weaving continues to be exercised by the Büyükaşık family.
Hatay Silk Weave is a local weaving, the warp and weft of which are made of natural white silk thread, using plain and twill weave wefts, with a width of 80-100 cm. There are no patterns in the weaves. Since silk is a valuable material, thicker weavings such as sadakor are woven with silk threads obtained by not disposing the cocoon residues left after spinning the cocoon. Shirts, keffiyeh, bed sheet, silk maşlah dress and belt are made from this weaving.
The source of origin no. 248 was received by Hatay Metropolitan Municipality for the protection of Hatay Silk as of 18.05.2017 within the scope of the Industrial Property Law No. 6769.
