BULDAN CLOTH

Buldan Cloth is woven in Buldan district of Denizli and its surroundings. Weaving has been widely practiced within the region since ancient times. Cotton farming in the region is very important and related to weaving. Starting from the 13th century, Yoruks and Turkmens from the Oghuz Tribes enriched the weaving tradition of the region with their diversity in the area of weaving. In the Aşık Paşazade History, the "Ak Alemli" (another name of Buldan Cloth) cloths of the region were mentioned. It is known that red fabrics as well as silk and cotton loincloth, veil, towel and kerchief were sent as gifts to Osman Gazi from Buldan, and that Murat I and Bayezid I used "Ak Alemli Cloth" of Tonozlu (Tokuzlu)-Latakia weavings, as the region was named of the time. Buldan Cloth/Buldan Twist is woven with natural white threads. The cloth is woven in plain weave by using cotton warp in normal twist and cotton weft with dense twist. In weaving, the warp is normally twisted and the weft is densely twisted. The most characteristic feature of Buldan Cloth is the wrinkled structure that it gains after being washed with hot soapy water. Wrinkled structure is formed because the width of the weft yarns is narrowed yarns. Buldan Cloth has different names such as Bükülü (Twisted) Cloth, Ak Alemli Cloth. Buldan Cloth is made of crimped fabrics, and since the fabric does not stick to the body, air remains between the clothing and the body, thus, creating thermal insulation. There are no patterns in the weaves. Loincloths, shirts, undershirt, bed sheets, covers, curtains, bath gloves were made from Buldan Cloth. Buldan Cloth has received a country of origin/geographical indication effective as of 27.01.2010 within the context of Article 12 of the Decree Law no. 555 on the Protection of Geographical Indications and as the result of the application by Buldan Chamber of Commerce.
