BAYBURT EHRAM

The word Ehram/Ihram is of Arabic origin and is derived from the words haram (unlawful) and mahrem (private). Ehram, which was the simplest wearable top clothing, had been used in many cultures as well as Anatolia in history. Evliya Çelebi gave information about the weaving looms and types of weaving in Bayburt in the tax records collected in Bayburt. Ehram is woven in a rectangular form by being patterned with a plain weave weft of wool material and coloured pattern yarns. Depending on the weaving loom and the size of the weave, it is sewn in the middle by weaving as double wings. The wing width is approximately 90 cm and the wing length varies between 250-270 cm. The local women living in the provinces of Bayburt, Erzurum and Şanlıurfa in the Eastern and Southeastern Anatolian regions especially use the ehram as an upper clothing when going out. This custom is called "wrapping the ehram". If a light coloured ehram is used, the woman is young, and if it is dark, she is old. Bridal ehram (white color), bundle ehram, backward ehram / head ehram are used as daily ehram. Bayburt Ehram is woven in Bayburt and its surroundings. Ground colours are woven with white (natural wool colour), purple, light brown, black (natural wool colour), grey/light brown (natural wool colour). Pattern threads are red, white, dark blue, blue, green. The patterns woven in Bayburt Ehram have names such as Pattern Mirrored Box, Apple Basket. Rectorate of Bayburt University has taken country of origin/the geographical indication no. 478 for the protection of Bayburt Ehram as of 01.04.2019 within the scope of the Industrial Property Law No. 6769.
