ÖDEMİŞ SILK WEAVE

Ödemiş Silk Weave is woven in Birgi quarter of Ödemiş district of İzmir province. Birgi was the capital of Aydınoğulları Principality in the 14th century. Numerous sources provide information about silk production and silk weaving in the region. Ödemiş silk weaving was mentioned especially in the writings of famous travellers such as İbn-i Batuta and Evliya Çelebi with admiration. Furthermore, the fact that it was frequently mentioned in Heritage records and Sharia Registries provides us information about how widespread weaving and its ways of use are. Ödemiş Silk Weave is woven in plain weave weft using silk warp and scarf yarns. Natural white silk is used in weaving process. There are no patterns in the weaves. This weave is still prepared in large numbers as dowry by the families of the bride and groom, and given to the wedding guests even today. Four sides of women's handkerchiefs are embroidered with needle lace, and one corner of men's handkerchiefs is embroidered with silk used in weaving. Handkerchiefs, large handkerchiefs, bed sheets and loincloths are made from Ödemiş Silk Weaving. It is specially used in the region as a handkerchief, large handkerchief and bed sheet.
